Global Positioning System at Sury...

Developed in the 1970's by the U.S. Department of Defense for military means, the Global Positioning System (GPS), permitting the user to pinpoint the geographic location of an object in real-time, is available for use by civilians in a version less precise than that used by the military.

At Sury we use the GPS for a variety of activities, whether it be for individuals who want to use it during their hikes, in their car, or our main activity which is to measure agricultural plots.

The information generated by the GPS is based on measurements of distance between a receptor and satellites. A receptor is strategically placed in an agricultural plot and using special software designed for managing agricultural plots, communication is had with the satellite and readings are taken. These readings give the exact dimensions of the plot. The readings can help to better organise plantings, forestings, location of landmarks (boundary markers, utility poles, ...) in order to comply with legislation. As well, GPS can help give you better precision about your plot of land than can local official and military registries.
